Kinja'd!!!

After a night in Chicago, I went and hit the bars of the fine town of Milwaukee with my friend Dave.

Milwaukee is cool. So different from California. I saw a Grandma drinking beer on ice in a bar while her teen granddaughter had a soda. At home, kids are not allowed in bars. When one bartender heard I had never tried Malort, she insisted on buying us a shot. And had one with us. That would never happen at home.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

I like the Midwest. But I’m not coming in winter.

You should come in the winter, it’s lovely. Much better than summer.

Your post makes it sound like the Malört experience happened in Milwaukee. If so, that’s the craziest thing I’ve ever heard!

Glad you enjoyed it though! (I mean Milwaukee, not the Malört obviously)

Milwaukee is alot like visiting parts of Europe. Lots of festivals, people take their beer seriously, and generally nice people. Neighborhood pubs are awesome as you get to meet the neighbors who are always there and arrange weekend events (Sometimes which is just drinking).

*Editor note: Of course I’m from there!*

I'm a fan of the traveling beer gardens in the city parks. We've hit a couple of them, and its nice to have a nice stein of beer while hanging out outside.

Malort is still terrible...no matter how you dress it up. But welcome to the club now that you did a shot...though it is usually custom in Chicago to do 2 or 3 to really be welcomed to the town.

Milwaukee shows you can still drink beer without being considered a drunk. The bars are designed to be social. We did most our family funerals in the back of a neighborhood pub.

I'm not the OP. I’ve lived in Milwaukee and Chicago for the last 9 years, and am well acquainted with the drinking customs.
